The 2020 World Stock Car Championship is the 71st season of World Stock Car Championship racing and the 52nd of the sport's "modern era". The season began on March 8 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park with the 75th running of The Icebreaker Sweepstakes, and concluded on November 29 in Austin, Texas. The season was heavily-affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the cancellation of the Donington Grand Prix and separation of the Independent's Trophy into a full support series for 2020.

The November 29 finale is the latest the series has concluded in the modern era.

Calendar Changes[edit | edit source]

Circuit Changes[edit | edit source]

Calendar changes as a result of the coronavirus pandemic[edit | edit source]

The 2020 championship was significantly disrupted by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Prior to the start of the season, Scuderia Benedetti expressed concern about the spread of the virus and its affect on the championship. Due to the team's location in Italy, which at the time had the most severe outbreak outside of China, there was significant concern that the team would not be able to leave the quarantine zone and attend races. Metzger Racing GmbH and Parsonsport shared similar concerns, citing the possibility of more additional outbreaks. Series officials announced that if a team was blocked from attending a race, the race would be postponed. All chartered European teams were able to attend the 2020 Icebreaker Sweepstakes, and remained in the United States for the duration of the season.

The easing of travel restrictions in the UAE, Jordan, Bahrain, South Africa, and Brazil allowed for the later scheduling of races in those respective countries. This allowed the series organizers to fulfill the requirements of having one race on three continents (four, in this case: North And South America, Asia, and Africa) to stage a World Championship.

Race Cancellations[edit | edit source]

All races outside of the continental United States were initially cancelled as a result of the pandemic and travel bans. Several others were cancelled due to policies enacted by the state governments limiting the the size of gatherings for nonessential events.

These included:

Rescheduled Races[edit | edit source]

Despite initially being cancelled due to travel restrictions, the Rounds of Abu Dhabi and Jordan were later rescheduled for their original dates.

  • The Round of Atlanta was scheduled to be run on March 15, but was postponed due to the pandemic and the subsequent air travel ban between the United States and Europe. The race was rescheduled to July 22.
  • The Round of North Carolina was scheduled to be run on March 22, but was postponed due to the pandemic and the subsequent air travel ban between the United States and Europe. The race was rescheduled to May 31.
  • The Round of Illinois was scheduled to be run on May 3, but was postponed due to the ongoing pandemic. The race would be held on August 16.
  • The Round of Indianapolis was scheduled to be run on May 10, but was postponed due to the ongoing pandemic. The race would be held on September 20.
  • The Round of Tennessee, originally scheduled to run on July 12, was instead run on June 14 due to the shuffling of the schedule.
  • The Round of Wisconsin, originally scheduled for August 9, was run on August 26.
  • The Round of Michigan, originally scheduled to be run as a twin race on August 15 and 16, was rescheduled to be run on August 12 as a single event.
  • The Round of Pennsylvania, originally scheduled for September 20, was instead held on July 26.
  • The Round of South Carolina, originally scheduled for September 26, was held on June 7.
  • The Round of Virginia, originally scheduled for October 4, was instead held on May 17.
  • The Round of Texas, originally scheduled for November 15, was held as the season finale on November 22.

Returning Races[edit | edit source]

Several races were revived in order to fill out the schedule and avoid repeating tracks. These races include:

Independent Teams[edit | edit source]

The following teams are entered in the 2020 Independent's Trophy competition. For 2020, the Independent's Trophy is changed from previous years.

In contrast to the grouping procedure of previous years, the Independent's Trophy teams are not guaranteed a spot in any race event; they will run a race for Independent's points prior to the main race, where the top four finishers will be granted a spot on the grid in the main event. The reasoning for this was to prevent as much intercontinental travel as possible, and the additional races were authorized to allow additional revenue to offset these teams' cost.

The only exceptions to this will be the special events, where every driver is eligible for the main race, and events where one driver receives the promoter's option.

Team Changes[edit | edit source]

  • Team LSR lost numerous sponsors as a result of Passgate, and announced its sponsorship packages the week prior to preseason testing. Amazon.com extended its sponsorship of the team to include the #23 car via its Twitch streaming service. The #46 reserve car gained sponsorship from Ally Financial group; Ally also became an associate sponsor for both the #22 and #23 cars.
  • Metzger Racing GmbH announced new primary sponsorship deals for both of its entries. The #2 car would retain primary sponsorship from fashion company New Yorker for races in Europe and the Middle East, while Allianz was brought on board to sponsor races in America and the Pacific. The #6 team would see new sponsorship from IHG for the full season. The team also announced that the reserve team would remain sponsored by All-Inkl.com.
  • TMO Racing rebrands as Skyactiv Motorsports and announces a new sponsorship deal with Coca Cola and Japanese clothing brand Renown.
