Johnathan Earl Martin Knight, Jr. (8 September 1922 - 24 March 1979) was an American stock car driver who competed in the World Stock Car Championship during the 1950's and early 1960's.

Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Knight was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania to Johnathan and Maude (nee Stevens) Knight. He was the fifth child and third son born to the couple. Knight was an athletically gifted child, excelling at baseball and basketball; he was offered a tryout for the Philadelphia Phillies around his 19th birthday, but opted to enlist in the Air Force for World War II. While enlisted he met Joe Carroll, whose family were investing in the Philadelphia area as part of economic development. The war passed with both Knight and Carroll remaining stateside.

WSCC Career[edit | edit source]

Knight and Carroll attended the 1950 Round of Pennsylvania, and were impressed not only with Peter Stafford but stock car racing as a whole. The two made plans to enter the race the next year. With 8th place finishes at both Langhorne Speedway and the following race in Nashville, Knight and Carroll submitted entries for a total of ten races. It was the race at Columbus Motor Speedway where they would shock everyone with a stunning win over series regulars Armond Cabot and Chuck Wilder.
