Warwick Fairgrounds was a 4/10-mile dirt oval located in Warwick, Rhode Island in the Lincoln Park Neighborhood. It was distinguished as the only track in Rhode Island to have hosted a World Stock Car Championship race, which it held annually from 1950 until 1963.
History[edit | edit source]
The speedway was first built in 1933 for midget cars; stock car racing came to the track after World War II, as its popularity spread along the east coast.
The World Stock Car Championship would visit the track annually until 1963, when the track was purchased and closed by the state of Rhode Island to make way for an extension of Interstate 95. Although racers and series officials fought to save the track, it was demolished in early 1964.
