Thompson Brothers Racing is an American professional stock car racing team currently competing in the World Stock Car Championship. The team was formed in 1946 by brothers Amos and George Thompson. The team holds the unique distinction of having competed full-time in every season of the World Stock Car Championship since its inception in 1950. They are also known for their relationship with Chrysler, and the use of car number 62 on their car.

History[edit | edit source]

Brothers Amos and George Thompson founded the team which would later bear their name in 1946 as part of their entry into the first Icebreaker Sweepstakes at Thompson Speedway in nearby Connecticut. The brothers would find success in the burgeoning stock car racing circuit, and were among the first to join Elliott Crawford's National Stock Car Series venture for the 1950 season with Amos as the team's first driver.

Car 62 History[edit | edit source]

Main article: Thompson Brothers Car 62

Car No. 62 was the first entry by Thompson Brothers Racing in the World Stock Car Championship, having debuted at the 1950 Icebreaker Sweepstakes with Amos Thompson driving. Car No. 62 has the distinction of being entered in every officially-sanctioned World Stock Car Championship race. For most of the team's existence it was the only full-time entry for the team; despite operating with significantly fewer personnel, the 62 team was able to compete with larger organizations thanks to a long-standing partnership with Chrysler. It is considered the flagship ride of the team, and among many fans it is the flagship ride of stock car racing as a whole. As such, it has attracted some of the auto racing's most prominent names, including Cameron Yost and Jay Orlov.

Car 63 History[edit | edit source]

Car No. 63 was first entered by the team in 1952 for several of the higher-paying races. This would be the norm until Arthur Stafford joined the team in 1969, when the second team went full-time. They would maintain full-time status until 1976, after which Stafford would depart the team and the No. 63 would return to part-time status for the next three decades. The No. 63 car gained a reputation for being a "celebrity car" at this time; the team would open the seat to prominent drivers from other racing series to give them an opportunity to race in competitive equipment on stock car racing's world stage.

The 2006 WSCTA-WSCA Agreement, which took effect in 2007, meant the Thompson Brothers would enter the No. 63 as the second chartered entry or lose their charter. They chose the former, utilizing the No. 63 car as a ride for Chrysler development drivers for the first few years. It would be 2012 when the No. 63 car saw a driver run more than one season in the seat.
