WSCC Canon Driver |
Yusuf Christos Mardin is a Turkish racing driver currently competing for Stafford Race Engineering in the Stock Car E-Series. He previously spent five seasons in the World Stock Car Championship competing for Stafford Race Engineering before moving to the E-Series.
Mardin was one of many drivers that was signed to Red Bull's Junior teams, and managed to secure a spot in Formula C at the age of 18. He made the switch to stock cars in 2014, running two seasons in the WSCC Lites for Red Bull Development.
Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]
Mardin was born and raised in the city of Mersin, a city on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. His father, Demir, was a professional footballer who played for Fenerbahçe S.K., and his mother Lydia is a Greek-born musician and humanitarian. He has an older brother, Isa, who currently acts as his race engineer, and two younger sisters, Tomris and Nadia.
Mardin began his racing career in karting at age 8. He and his brother tuned the karts themselves, getting them set up the morning of every race. Mardin won multiple championships in Turkey in his youth, and at 13 was signed to a development contract with Red Bull. He quickly ascended the ranks into higher-tier karting series, and landed on the path to Formula One by the age of 16.
Formula C (2011 - 2013)[edit | edit source]
Mardin ran three seasons in Formula C; in 2011 he ran in the Formula C European regional championship, and in 2012 and 2013 he ran the International Formula C Championship. He finished 11th in the 2012 championship and sixth in 2013. He managed a podium finish in each season.
WSCC Lites (2014 - 2015)[edit | edit source]
Mardin made the decision to move to stock car racing after seeing the large pool of drivers Red Bull had signed to its Formula A development programme. He signed with Red Bull-affiliated Stafford Race Engineering for a two-year development contract in the Lites series, with an option for two more years at the World Stock Car Championship level.
WSCC (2015 - 2020)[edit | edit source]
Prior to the 2015 Icebreaker Sweepstakes, Stafford Race Engineering driver Jensen Irvine announced his retirement at the end of the season, opening up the (then) #44 car to a new driver. Mardin was announced as the lead candidate for the seat and was named the team's reserve driver for the season. After a successful Lites campaign, Mardin was confirmed as the team's second driver on a two-year contract. As is tradition with Stafford Race Engineering, Mardin was allowed to choose his own number; he opted for #8, a tribute to his father's old soccer uniform.
Stock Car E-Series (2021 - present)[edit | edit source]
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Mardin currently lives in New York City, having relocated there in 2014. He has previously lived in Berlin, Germany and London.
Mardin is a fan of the band The Arctic Monkeys; he named his dog Jamie after the band's guitarist Jamie Cook.
In 2019, Mardin married longtime girlfriend Hamide Terzi in a private ceremony in Didim. The pair welcomed their son, Deniz, in January 2021.
