Amalia Sofia Moretti is a Swiss racing driver who will enter the World Stock Car Championship for Red Bull Everton Racing in 2017. Moretti was the testing driver for Alitalia Racing, a Scuderia Benedetti supported Independent's Trophy team that folded in 2016; Moretti did not make a race start for the team, instead driving during test sessions and developing setups for the team's primary drivers.

Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Moretti was born on August 10, 1997 in the town of Poschiavo, Switzerland, about 35 minutes from the Italian border to Aldo and Sylvie Moretti (née Leroy). Slyvie, an environmental scientist, moved to Switzerland with Aldo from their native Venice in 1993 to study the glaciers in the Bernina Pass. Aldo opened a hotel in the town under his family's Hotel di Moretti brand the following year. Her father's wealth allowed Amalia to receive a world-class education when her racing career began; she was educated in Poschiavo until she turned eight, at which point her father hired private tutors to ensure she focused on education as well as racing. She has expressed a desire to continue her education at university-level.

Moretti attended the Italian Grand Prix with her father every summer, a tradition that sparked her love of motorsports; she began karting in Italy at age seven, and had placed highly in several regional championships before making the move to developmental racing leagues in 2010. Red Bull scouted the young Moretti, who they noted was able to run competitively despite a (relative) lack of funding compared to her competition. Moretti signed with Red Bull's development program in 2012, moving to the FIAT Coppa Italia as Red Bull's youngest driver. After two championships in as many seasons in Coppa Italia, Moretti was moved to Eurocup after expressing an interest in stock car racing; she was widely assumed to be on the path for Formula One. As part of Red Bull's development program, she was signed to the junior team, Bordeaux-based Equipe Toreau Rouge.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Moretti has been described as "absolutely fearless" by many of her friends and competitors. Fausto Zapata, her teammate for the 2015 Eurocup season, noted that she "shows absolutely no fear or hesitation. She is one of the boldest drivers I have ever met." She is a triathlete and a competitive mixed climber and free diver. She has said that she finds triathlons "far more stressful than racing cars; there is far more distraction during a triathlon." She has been known to compete in snowmobile racing during the offseason; in 2015 she competed in three races under the pseudonym "Lauren Savage", a tribute to the American racing legend of the same name. When asked about this, she stated that "When I was learning the history of stock car racing, Lauren Savage became my personal hero."

Moretti is fluent in Italian, German, French, English and Romansh. She currently lives in her hometown of Poschiavo.
