This is a list of points scoring systems used to determine professional stock car racing champions since 1950. The championship is awarded each year to the driver who accumulates the most points over the course of the season.
1950 - 1972 National Stock Car Series[edit | edit source]
- Between 1950 and 1972, the National Stock Car Series awarded championship points only to the top ten finishers. Points were only awarded for finishing position; no bonus points were given. The points system was based on mileage; the winner received two points per mile (i.e. a 300-mile race awarded 600 points, while a 75-mile race awarded 150), with the remaining points scaling down.
- Points were awarded to the driver who started the race; relief drivers would not score championship points.
- The table below assumes all drivers ran the full race distance.
