This is a list of points scoring systems used to determine professional stock car racing champions since 1950. The championship is awarded each year to the driver who accumulates the most points over the course of the season.

1950 - 1972 National Stock Car Series[edit | edit source]

  • Between 1950 and 1972, the National Stock Car Series awarded championship points only to the top ten finishers. Points were only awarded for finishing position; no bonus points were given. The points system was based on mileage; the winner received two points per mile (i.e. a 300-mile race awarded 600 points, while a 75-mile race awarded 150), with the remaining points scaling down.
  • Points were awarded to the driver who started the race; relief drivers would not score championship points.
  • The table below assumes all drivers ran the full race distance.
Race distance 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th
50 miles 100 80 70 60 50 40 30 20 10 5
100 miles 200 160 140 120 100 80 60 40 20 10
150 miles 300 240 210 180 150 120 90 60 30 15
200 miles 400 320 280 240 200 160 120 80 40 20
250 miles 500 400 350 300 250 200 150 100 50 25
300 miles 600 480 420 360 300 240 180 120 60 30
350 miles 700 560 490 420 350 280 210 140 70 35
