Louis Catesby Dawson (25 September 1889 - 22 June 1946) was an American race car driver.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Dawson was born in Washington, Indiana on September 25, 1889. He competed in the Indianapolis 500 three times, winning the 1912 running after Rosario DiPalma, who had lead 196 of the 200 laps, experienced a mechanical failure and had to retire. He was the youngest winner until Tony Randolph in 1952, a record his great-great granddaughter Taylor would break in 2010. His final Indianapolis 500 in 1914 saw him retire on lap 45 after an accident.
Dawson died on June 22, 1946 at age 56.
Dawson Family[edit | edit source]
Main article: Dawson family
Dawson's eldest son, Maurice Dawson, was a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 in 1953 and 1954. His great-grandson, Ray Dawson, won the 1986 running of the event, and his great-great granddaughter Taylor won the race in 2010, becoming the first woman to do so. The Dawson family has remained prominent in motorsports, primarily in sprint cars and (recently) stock car racing.
