Metzger Racing GmbH, currently competing as BMW Metzger Motorsports is a German-licensed World Stock Car Championship team based in Munich. It was founded in 1988 by endurance racer Johan Metzger, and would move to stock cars in 1992 following Metzger's entry in the 1991 Donington Grand Prix for Parsonsport. The team maintained a part-time effort until 1997, when it became the first entrant in the series' new Independent's Trophy. They remained an Independent's team through 2006, when they announced their intention to enter the grid as a full-time team with backing from Volkswagen beginning the following year. After three seasons with Volkswagen, Metzger became the factory team for BMW following the former's withdrawal of factory support for its WSCC programs.
WSCC History[edit | edit source]
Origin[edit | edit source]
Metzger Racing's origins are rooted in endurance racing; Johan Metzger founded the team in 1988 to run the 24 Hours of Daytona and 24 Hours of Le Mans. The team would manage multiple class wins at Daytona throughout the 1990's, and developed a reputation for outstanding reliability. Metzger himself explored multiple forms of motorsport, running events in rally, hillclimb and touring car series before turning his eye to stock cars.
